VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 60 - Blessed Trinity 62
The
Varsity Boys dropped to 4 - 5 on the
season losing a tough battle to the
Blessed Trinity Titans in the SEBA
Holiday Classic. The Titans came into the
contest undefeated at 11 - 0 and ranked
#2 in Class AAA with quality wins over
Marietta and Dunwoody under their belt.
Etowah opened the contest with the first
two buckets and held an early 6 - 2
margin when Blessed Trinity briefly took
the lead at 7 - 6, only to see the Eagles
respond with eight unanswered points and
a seven point advantage. Etowah retained
the lead thru the quarter finishing on
top at the first stop 20 - 13. The Titans
came right back fast to start the second
quarter with the first seven points to
knott the score at 20. Etowah regained
the lead following a pair of free throws
and a short bucket, keeping the Titans at
bay for the remainder of the quarter and
taking a slim 32 - 31 margin into the
locker at half.
Blessed Trinity came out after the break
and picked up the intensity, scoring
first to regain the lead followed by
Etowah going back on top with two scores
before the Titans chipped away with seven
unanswered. Etowah stayed close until the
end of the quarter when the Titans
blitzed the Eagles for an 8 - 1 run and a
double digit lead at 51 - 41 heading into
the fourth. Blessed Trinity opened the
final period with a score to go up twelve
when Etowah responded with a 12 - 2 run
to cut the gap to two at 55 - 53. Blessed
Trinity increased their lead to four
connecting on a pair of free throws and
the Eagles came right back to tie the
game at 57 with 1:12 to play. Blessed
Trinity once again took the lead and
stopped Etowah with a blocked shot on the
defensive end. Etowah sent the Titans to
the line where they connected on the
first free throw and put back the missed
shot on the second free throw to go up by
five at 62 - 57 with thirty tics
remaining. Etowah came down and banked in
a trey to cut the lead to two with 16.2
seconds on the clock. Etowah then sent
the Titans back to the line with 11.6
seconds and caught a break when a line
violation by Blessed Trinity turned the
ball over to Etowah with a chance to
either tie or take the lead. Etowah
brought the ball up to half court and
called a time out to set the final play,
but unfortunately the Eagles miscued on
the last possession and the Titans
escaped with the two point victory.
Etowah had three players in double
figures with eleven points, Tyler
Blackwell who was also named the teams
MVP for the game, Zach Moore and Chris
Brasher.
