The
Varsity Boys dropped their season opener
on the road to the Campbell Spartans by a
score of 45-46. Campbell started the
scoring converting at the line for their
first four points, when the Eagles
responded with six unanswered points to
take the early lead. Etowah held a one
point advantage at the first stop, 12-11.
The Eagles went up by four early in the
second quarter only to see the Spartans
match the score. Neither team was able to
put any distance the remainder of the
half as they headed to the break at
20-20.
Etowah took control early in the third
quarter scoring the first twelve points
while holding the Spartans scoreless for
over 5 1/2 minutes. The Spartans put
together an 8-2 run to end the quarter
with Etowah still up 34-28.
The start of the final period was all
Campbell, as they outscored Etowah 9-2
through the first four minutes to take
their first lead at 39-36 since midway
through the first period. Etowah came
right back with a quick 7-2 spurt to
regain the lead at 43-41. Campbell
knotted the score with a pair of free
throws to again tie the score. The Eagles
countered going up 45-43 for their last
lead of the game. Campbell tied the
contest at 45 on a put back, followed by
a stop and converting one of two from the
line for the one point lead with under a
minute in the contest. Etowah was unable
to capitalize on a last ditch effort for
the victory.
Etowah was lead in scoring by Spencer
Poer with 15, followed by Ben Stone with
14 and Zach Okerblad with 9.
The two teams will be aiming for each
other on January 11th at the game that
counts toward the region record, as the
initial game against cross-region foes is
not recorded in the regional record.
