VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 62 - Harrison 64
The
Varsity Boys dropped to 0-2 in the season
coming up short in a 64-62 overtime loss
to the Harrison Hoyas. The game played in
a jam packed Harrison gym was
electrifying from the opening tip as the
Hoyas were out to get redemption for
their double overtime loss and regional
tournament elimination at the hands of
the Eagles last spring.
Harrison took the opening lead when
Etowah went on a 9-1 run to build a 16-8
advantage. Harrison responded with a
bucket followed by an Eagle bucket from
beyond the arc, holding a 19-10 lead at
the first stop. Etowah continued their
stellar play to open the second quarter
with an early 6-2 spurt and a thirteen
point advantage. Harrison fought right
back scoring 7 unanswered with Etowah
responding putting together a 10-2 spurt
and a fourteen point lead late in the
quarter before a Hoya trey, making the
Etowah advantage 35-24 at the midway
point
Etowah opened the third stage with the
first score of the second half when the
Hoyas come charging back, outscoring the
Eagles 14-4. Etowah responded with a
couple of unanswered scores to go back to
the top by 7 midway through the quarter
only to see Harrison finish the quarter
on a 9-2 run on the strength of a steal
and an old fashion 3-point play and a
banked three from the wing to tie the
game at 47 heading into fourth quarter.
Harrison opened the final eight minutes
with a three-pointer to take their first
lead since early in the game. Etowah
regained the lead on a pair of buckets
only to relinquish it back briefly to
Harrison before Etowah scored 6
unanswered points for a 57-53 lead and
the opportunity to increase the margin
when the Hoyas blocked a lay-up and
converted two points on the opposite end
to cut the Eagles lead to two with one
minute to play. Etowah was fouled
underneath on the next possession and
able to convert on of two and a three
point advantage. The Hoyas cut the margin
to one and then elected to foul Etowah,
sending the Eagles to the line where they
converted both free throws to go up 60-57
in regulation. Harrison was then unable
to connect on the offensive end with
Etowah coming up with the ball before
being fouled with 9.5 seconds. Etowah was
unable to convert and the Hoyas took the
rebound and hit a trey from the corner to
tie the game at 60 with under a second to
play in regulation. Etowah was unable to
hit a desperation shot sending the two
teams into overtime for their second
straight appearance.
Harrison struck first in the overtime
period with Etowah knotting the score at
62 on a pair of free throws at the one
minute mark. Harrison scored inside to go
up 64-62, coming up with a blocked shot
followed by forcing an Etowah turnover
with four seconds remaining and the Hoyas
victory.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Tyler
Blackwell with 21 followed by Zach Moore
with 13 and Ben Stone with 10.
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys on a
hard fought, well played performance.
