VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 53 - Harrison 58
The
Varsity Boys had another heart breaking
loss to the Harrison Hoyas for the second
time this season, coming up on the short
end of a region game by the score of 58 -
53.. The loss drops Etowah to 6 - 11 on
the season and 2 - 4 in region play, as
eight of the eleven losses by the Eagles
have been by five points or less.
Harrison came into the contest undefeated
in region play as Etowah was looking to
redeem a two-point overtime loss to the
Hoyas in their earlier meeting scored
first the first two buckets to go up 4 -
0. Harrison got on track and quickly
knotted the score in a tight early
contest that saw the score remain close
with Harrison taking the lead at 14 - 10
at the first stop. Etowah opened the
second quarter to cut the gap to two when
Harrison put together a 9 - 0 run to
build a double digit lead midway thru the
quarter. Etowah continued to compete hard
and fought right back with six unanswered
points en route to a 13 - 3 close to draw
within one at half, down 26 - 25.
The Eagles came out in the third period
with the same intensity they took into
the locker room at half scoring the first
six points of the quarter to go back on
top. The two teams then traded buckets
and at the midway point of the third
stanza Etowah led 35 - 30, outscoring the
Hoyas 23 - 7 over the previous eight
minutes played. Harrison managed to cut
the gap to two points, but Etowah struck
right back to go up by six in the closing
seconds before a final Hoya bucket had
Etowah on top 43 - 39 heading into the
final eight minutes. Etowah opened the
fourth connecting on a pair of free
throws followed by a bucket to go back up
by eight at 47 - 39, when Harrison took
advantage of some Eagle turnovers for six
unanswered points to trail by two. The
two teams exchanged buckets and Etowah
connected on a put back to remain on top
51 - 47 with 2:30 to play when Harrison
countered with eleven unanswered points
to put the game away before a final Eagle
bucket closed out the contest by the
score of 58 - 53.
Etowah had three players in double
figures as Spencer Poer and Tyler
Blackwell contributed 13 points followed
by Zach Okerblad with 12.
