Etowah 55 - Kennesaw Mountain 58
The
Varsity Boys fell to 7 - 13 on the season
and 3 - 6 in region play dropping another
close game at the hands of the Kennesaw
Mountain Mustangs.
Etowah came into the game having beaten
Kennesaw Mountain by nine in their
previous meeting, fell behind early as
the Mustangs connected on three buckets
from long range around an inside bucket
to jump out in front 11 - 4. Etowah
regrouped down the stretch of the opening
quarter and fought back to tie the score
at 13 before the two teams traded buckets
and finished knotted at 15. Kennesaw
regained the lead to start the second
period but Etowah came right back with an
old-fashioned three-point lead to go back
on top. The Mustangs once again hit a
trey for their fourth of the half going
back on top when Etowah struck right back
with five unanswered points. The play
remained tight in a quarter that saw the
lead change hands nine times before a
final bucket by Kennesaw Mountain sent
them to the locker room on top 37 - 34.
The third period continued to be a
see-saw contest with Kennesaw Mountain
maintaining the lead for the majority of
the period, going up six late in the
quarter when Etowah closed with the final
four points to trail 46 - 44. Kennesaw
Mountain once again stretched their lead
by matching their largest margin at seven
midway thru the fourth quarter when
Etowah responded with a 7 - 0 run to
knott the score at 53 with just over two
minutes to play. The two teams traded
buckets as the game was tied again at 55
when Kennesaw Mountain took the lead at
57 - 55 and Etowah was unable to match,
forcing the Eagles to foul the Mustangs
in the closing seconds. Kennesaw Mountain
converted on one free throw giving the
Eagles a chance to tie the game with 8
seconds remaining. Etowah called a
timeout to set up the final play but was
unable to convert the trey followed by a
desperation attempt as they came up short
again.
Zach Okerblad led the way for Etowah with
19 points followed by Nate Washington
with 13 off the bench.
