VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 65 - Murray County 61
The
Varsity Boys won their final home game of
the season to improve to 8 - 14 on the
season and 4 - 7 in region play over the
visiting Murray County Indians.
Etowah opened Senior Night by jumping out
to a quick 7 - 2 lead only to see the
visiting Indians attempt to spoil the
festivities with eight unanswered points
at the half way mark to take the lead in
the first quarter. Murray County
continued to control the last half of the
opening period and closed out on top 23 -
17. The Indians opened the second period
with a 9 - 0 run and looked to be taking
control as they led 32 - 17 with over
five minutes remaining in the half.
Etowah maintained their composure and
started chipping away at the Indians lead
as they managed to cut the margin to
single digits as the two teams headed
into the locker with Murray County up 36
- 27.
Murray County opened the second half with
the initial score followed by the two
teams matching buckets when Etowah got a
spark and turned an eleven point deficit
into a one point lead capped by a trey at
the 2:30 mark as the Eagles went on a 12
- 0 run. Murray County briefly regained
the lead before the contest was knotted
twice in the closing minutes of the
quarter before a final Indians bucket had
them back on top 48 - 46. Etowah opened
the fourth quarter with a bucket to tie
the game again and came right back with
another trey to take the lead at 51 - 48.
Murray County countered with a trey of
their own and Etowah came right back with
another from long range as Senior Night
for the Eagles was heating up. Etowah
couldn't put any distance between them as
Murray countered each Eagles score
pulling within one on three different
occaisions, until Etowah came up with a
couple of huge stops to build a five
point lead with 2:03 to play. Etowah
controlled the ball down the stretch
connecting on crucial free throws and
preserving the final home game victory by
the score of 65 - 61.
Etowah put ten players in the scoring
column on Senior Night led by Zach
Okerblad with 17 followed by Chris
Brasher with 11 and Spencer Poer, Jon
Eargle, Nate Washington and Tyler
Blackwell shipping in seven each and Bill
Elliott contributing 5.
Congratulations to seniors, Tyler
