VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 57 - South Cobb 60
The
Varsity Boys dropped a hard fought battle
to cross-region South Cobb by the score
of 60 - 57 to go 6 - 8 on the season. The
initial contest against cross-region foes
isn't factored into the regional
standings as Etowah remains 2 - 1 in
region play.
South Cobb got on the board first but
Etowah regained the lead early on a pair
of buckets from long range. South Cobb
managed to tie the score late in the
quarter but Etowah didn't relinquish the
lead, staying on top 14 - 13 at the first
stop. Etowah knudged their lead to five
points early in the second quarter then
following a couple of free throws by
South Cobb, Etowah put together a 7 - 0
run to build a double digit lead at 27 -
17 with 4:30 to play in the half. South
Cobb took advantage of a couple Etowah
turn overs and missed opportunities from
the foul line to close the gap to one at
27 - 26 heading into the locker room.
The third quarter started with Etowah
connecting on the first bucket to end
their drought, only to see South Cobb put
together a couple of unanswered scores to
regain the lead for the first time since
early in the opening period. Etowah
responded outscoring South Cobb 7 - 2 to
go back on top by four. South Cobb
battled right back with seven unanswered
points to regain the lead followed by an
Etowah bucket to tie the game late in the
quarter before South Cobb drained a three
at the buzzer to lead 44 - 41 heading
into the fourth quarter. South Cobb
increased the gap to nine early in the
final eight minutes when Etowah responded
with a score from long range on top of an
inside bucket to cut the lead to four.
Etowah continued their comeback with six
quick points in the paint to take the
lead at 55 - 54 with 1:20 remaining.
South Cobb jumped back on top with a
quick score, followed by another score at
the expense of a couple of Eagle
turnovers to go up by three with less
than 8 seconds remaining. Etowah looked
to have a last gasp chance as they drew a
foul on a three-point attempt but was
unable to capitalize as they connected on
two from the line to cut the gap to one
with 3.7 seconds. Etowah immediately
fouled South Cobb who connected on a pair
of free throws before a last ditch
desperation came up short.
Etowah was led in scoring by Spencer Poer
with 17 followed by Zach Okerblad with
11. The Eagles unfortunately lost their
leading scorer, Ben Stone who suffered a
broken hand early in the first quarter.
