VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 60 - Thomson 57
The
Varsity boys evened their record on the
season at 5 - 5 with an opening round
victory at the Deep South Classic held at
Brookwood High School by defeating the
Thomson Bulldogs 60 - 57.
Etowah opened the game with the first
bucket but Thomson pushed the ball up the
floor quickly to take an early lead. The
two teams continued to exchange scores
thru the first five minutes with Thomson
holding a slim 11 - 10 lead at the three
minute mark before closing out the
quarter with a 6 -1 spurt for an early 17
- 11 advantage at the first stop. Etowah
chipped away in the second quarter
closing the gap back to three following a
bucket and foul on a sideline
out-of-bounds play, when the Bulldogs
mounted a 10 - 0 run to go up thirteen
late in the quarter. The two teams
exchanged a couple of buckets in the
closing minutes of the half as Thomson
carried a 33 - 20 lead into the locker.
Thomson maintained their double digit
advantage midway thru the third period
until the Eagles responded with an 11 - 2
run to cut the margin to two before a
final bucket by the Bulldogs closed out
the period with Thomson holding a four
point margin at 43 - 39. Etowah opened
the final quarter with more defensive
pressure on the half court and outscored
the Bulldogs 10 - 3 in the first five
minutes to take their first lead of the
game since the opening bucket. Thomson
hit a pair of free throws with just over
three minutes to play to draw within one,
followed by an Etowah bucket and another
Thomson free throw making the score 51 -
49 with 2:48 to play. Etowah then reeled
off six unanswered points to build an
eight point lead at 57 - 49 with under 45
seconds remaining in the contest. The
Bulldogs refused to quit as they drove
for quick scores around a couple of Eagle
turnovers to cut the margin to three with
25 tics on the clock. Thomson was forced
to foul and the Eagles responded at the
line to take home the opening round
victory by the final count of 60 - 57.
Etowah was led in scoring by Spencer Poer
with 16 points, followed by Ben Stone and
Tyler Blackwell with 14 and 12
respectively. The Eagles also managed to
put every player in the scoring column
that saw action in the game.
