VARSITY BOYS
Etowah 59 - Wesleyan 70
The
Varsity Boys gave the favored Wesleyan
Wolves a hard fought contest before
falling 70 - 59 in the second round of
the Deep South Classic. Wesleyan who
sports two Division 1 signees on their
roster with 6' 9" Howard Thompkins
who is headed to Georgia and 6' 5"
Tanner Smith committed to Clemson, found
out early that Etowah came to play as the
Eagles matched Wesleyan in scores thru
the first three minutes when Etowah took
their first lead of the game at 9 - 6
connecting from long range. Wesleyan
again hit from inside and Etowah came
right back with two unanswered points and
a five point lead midway thru the opening
period. Etowah maintained the lead for
the quarter with the Wolves connecting on
two free throws at the close to cut the
margin to 15 - 14 at the first stop. The
second period continued to be a battle of
both teams trying to match each other as
there was five lead changes in the first
three minutes, when the Wolves connected
on a bucket from beyond the arc to go up
by four midway. Etowah continued to hang
tough and knotted the score at 31 with
less than 2 minutes to play only to see
Wesleyan regain the lead with a pair of
free throws followed by a missed shot by
the Eagles and a drive to the bucket by
Wesleyan at the buzzer for a 35 - 31 half
time lead. Etowah played the entire first
half without a turnover, but didn't have
an answer for Thompkins who recorded 21
first half points as he was 8-for-8 from
the field with 8 rebounds.
Etowah continued to display their heart
to open the third quarter as they quickly
cut the gap to one at 35 - 34, only to
see the Wolves take advantage of the
first Eagle miscues as Wesleyan reeled
off nine unanswered points for a ten
point lead at 44 - 34. Etowah regrouped
and came right back to cut the margin to
three when Thompkins responded with an
and-one followed by a pair of free throws
to put Wesleyan back up by eight. The
third quarter ended with Wesleyan on top
53 - 46. Wesleyan opened the final eight
minutes with an early 6 - 2 run to build
their largest lead at eleven when Etowah
once again hung tough putting together a
7 - 0 spurt to trail by four at 59 - 55
with 4 minutes to play. The Wolves took a
time out to set up their strategy to
pound the ball inside to Thompkins, who
responded with an and-one followed by a
Wesleyan defensive stop and another
inside bucket from Thompkins for a nine
point lead with under three minutes to
play before closing out the Eagles by the
final score of 70 - 59.
Etowah had a balanced scoring attack as
all players who saw action contributed to
the scoring column, with Ben Stone
leading the way with 13 followed by Tyler
Blackwell, Chris Brasher and Zach
Okerblad with 11, 10 and 8 respectively.
Wesleyan's two Division 1 signees carried
the load for the Wolves as Howard
Thompkins finished with 35 points and
Tanner Smith chipped in 17.
