51 - Northwest Whitfield 43
The
Varsity Girls improved to 7 - 2 on the
season with an opening round victory at
the Deep South Classic held at Brookwood
High School over the Northwest Whitfield
Lady Bruins by the score of 51 - 43.
Etowah opened the 9:00 a.m. game with an
early 10 - 5 lead en route to finishing
the opening quarter on top 12 - 9. The
Lady Bruins connected on a bucket from
long range to start the second period and
knott the score at 12. Etowah regained
the lead with a couple of hoops inside
before Northwest Whitfield came right
back with an old-fashioned three point
play to cut the margin to one midway thru
the quarter. Etowah refused to relinquish
the lead and carried in a 24 - 19 lead at
half.
The Lady Eagles came out with the first
couple of buckets in the third period to
go up nine before the Lady Bruins stopped
the 7 - 0 spurt dating back to the second
quarter with a bucket. Northwest
Whitfield chipped away to draw within
five late in the third period only to see
Etowah close out the quarter with a 6 - 1
run and a ten point advantage heading
into the final eight minutes. The final
eight minutes saw Etowah go up as many as
twelve early in the period only to see
Northwest Whitfield cut the gap to seven
at the five minute mark. Etowah continued
to hold the Lady Bruins at bay with
Northwest Whitfield only able to get
within five points on a couple of
occaisions down the stretch before Etowah
closed out the contest on top 51 - 43.
Etowah put two players in double figures
with Alicia Manning leading the way with
23 followed by Lindsey Mason with 12.
