VARSITY GIRLS
Etowah
71 - Wesleyan 74
The
Varsity Girls were outlasted in the
second round of the Deep South Classic by
the Wesleyan Lady Wolves by the score of
74 - 71. Etowah jumped out to a quick 8 -
0 start over the No. 2 Ranked Class AA
Lady Wolves, who responded with a mass
substitution of four players and eleven
unanswered points to go on top 11 - 8.
The two teams kept a fast tempo in the
opening quarter with Wesleyan putting up
twenty-seven points in the quarter
connecting beyond half-court at the
buzzer for an eight point lead at the
first break. The pace didn't slow in the
second period as Wesleyan opened with
five quick points to build an early
double digit lead at 32 - 19. Etowah came
right back to cut the gap to six at 32 -
26 only to see Wesleyan connect from long
range. Wesleyan maintained their
advantage building as much as a fourteen
point lead late in the quarter before the
two teams took a rest with Wesleyan on
top 46 - 35.
Etowah opened the third period with a 5 -
0 run to get back within striking
distance at 46 - 41 when the Lady Wolves
matched the 5 - 0 spurt to go back up by
double digits. Etowah then matched
Wesleyan a couple of scores midway thru
the quarter but finished strong and only
trailed by seven at 62 - 55 heading into
the final period. Etowah continued to
chip away in the fourth quarter, cutting
the margin to three with just over 4
minutes to play. The Lady Wolves could
only manage to increase their lead by
five with 3 minutes to play when Etowah
scored at the 2:17 mark and then came up
with a steal and a bucket to trail by one
at 70 - 69 with two minutes in the
contest. Wesleyan added a bucket and
Etowah kept pace connecting on a pair of
free throws to trail by one with 17. 5
seconds. Etowah then sent Wesleyan to the
line where they connected on one free
throw for a two point lead. The Lady
Eagles then took a time out after getting
the rebound to set up a play to either
tie or take the lead with 6. 9 seconds in
the game. Etowah then had trouble getting
the ball in bounds and signaled for a
timeout it didn't have, drawing a
technical foul. Wesleyan made one of the
technical free throws and was able to
kill the clock and come away with the
three point victory, leaving Etowah 7 - 3
overall on the season.
Etowah was led in scoring by Alicia
Manning with 22 points followed by
Lindsey Mason with 20 and Stephanie
